Licenses

Symposium is set in three open fonts, built on open-source software, and quotes its sources briefly. This page credits each.

Fonts

The three faces are licensed under the SIL Open Font License, version 1.1. They are served from Symposium’s own site, not from a font service.

Quotations

Most quotations in Symposium are in the public domain: English translations and original English texts hosted by Project Gutenberg and Wikisource. Where no public-domain English translation serves, the quotation is Symposium’s own translation of a public-domain original; those essays say so beside the source. A few essays discuss works still in copyright (Camus, Sartre, Arendt, and other twentieth-century authors). Each of those quotes one or two sentences, for the purpose of commentary and criticism, under fair use; the Quotations page marks them, and the recommended reads for those works link to a library or a publisher rather than to a free copy. If you hold rights in a quoted work and object, write to luca@aperturetechnologies.net and the quotation will be replaced with a paraphrase. The essays themselves are written for Symposium.

Illustrations

The plate for each idea was generated for Symposium with an image model from a written scene, then edited into a black-ink engraving that the app prints over the school’s color. No illustration reproduces an existing artwork.
