Terms of use

Effective 2026-09-02

These terms cover the Symposium app and the website at symposium.aperturetechnologies.net. Using either means you accept them.

What Symposium is

Symposium is a reading app. Each entry is a short essay on one philosophical idea, written for general reading. It is not professional, legal, medical, financial, or psychological advice. Where an idea touches on how to live, treat it as one voice in a long conversation, not as a prescription.

The content

The essays are written for Symposium. Nearly every quotation is public domain: a public-domain English translation, an original English text, or Symposium’s own translation of a public-domain original. A few essays on twentieth-century works quote one or two sentences of a text still in copyright, for commentary and criticism, under fair use; the licenses page explains how to raise an objection. Each essay names its source, and the recommended reads link to free copies of the full works where a free copy exists. The illustrations were generated for Symposium with an image model and edited into engravings. Where they exist, the licenses page lists the sources and the software Symposium is built on.

You may share the plate cards the app makes, quote the essays with a credit, and link to any page. You may not sell the essays or the illustrations, or present them as your own.

Outside links

The “Read free” links lead to sites Symposium does not run, such as Project Gutenberg and Wikisource. Symposium is not responsible for their content or their availability.

No warranty

Symposium is provided as it is, without any warranty. We do not promise that it is free of errors, that every essay is complete, or that the app or the site is always available. To the extent the law allows, the operator is not liable for any loss that comes from using Symposium or from acting on what you read in it.

Your data

Symposium has no accounts and keeps your reading record on your device. The privacy page lists what is stored and how to erase it.

Changes, law, and contact

If these terms change, the new version appears here with a new effective date. The terms are governed by the laws applicable to the operator. Questions go to luca@aperturetechnologies.net.
